I've been thinking - 6 September 2020

There is a hymn that starts with the words “Will your anchor hold in the storms of life?”.

It seems to me that we have faced a number of storms over the last few years.  Added to the events we are facing in our nation, the truth is that with the increased connections today via social media and the internet, world problems are now open for us to view on our phone, tablet or smart TV.

With all this information coming at us, and the uncertainty of life at the moment, the question this hymn asks is more pertinent than ever.

Where is your life anchored? What is the foundation of your life? When everything is falling down around us and life is changing in a myriad different directions all at once, what gives you hope and sustains you in the midst of the storm?

This week, in the passage we are looking at, Matthew 7:24-25, Jesus says “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.”

Something for us to ponder this week, is the simple and yet profound comment that Jesus does not call us to simply believe in Him, or put our trust in Him, but we are to act on what Jesus says.

So as we look at this passage this week, what does acting on the words of Jesus mean for you?

Food for thought.
