I've been thinking - 15 March 2020

posted date: Friday 13th March 2020

Last Sunday evening I attended the meeting to hand out the booklets for the Hope Project 2020.  If you have not heard of Hope Project, the idea is to prayer through the streets of Christchurch and place booklets into letterboxes that share stories of hope and the gospel message.

As I sat listening to the various instructions and as we spent time in prayer together, I was taken by the thought that as a church God has positioned us for growth!

What do I mean? Moving to two morning services has immediately enabled us to have capacity for those that God is drawing into His Kingdom. And as I reflect on this, I think of some of the conversations I have had with people recently that indicate that God is indeed drawing people to Himself.

And as I ponder these things, it begs the deeper question, when we gather who are we trying to please?

I would argue that Biblically in the first instance we gather to honour and worship our all loving, all consuming God and Father of our Lord Jesus.  It IS all about Him.

But then, we are also there for all peoples to hear and respond to the good news of Jesus. Again, I am reminded of the comment that we need to do everything we can to enable people to be able to come and hear the good news of Jesus’ love for them.

Finally, we gather to be encouraged on the journey with God. But I would suggest that in terms of priorities, it is in this order.

So as we distribute the Hope booklets, as we gather to worship God, also keep your eyes open for those that God is drawing to Himself. And may we have open and generous hearts to all that God brings across our path, either as they come into the church, or those that God brings across our lives each and every day.

Lord give us ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Amen
