Note from the Elders

posted date: Friday 26th July 2019

I wonder how much you know about elders. They’re the group elected by the church members to fulfill the governance role in the church. I’ve been an elder for 6 months now, and in that time I’ve been observing how they operate and thinking about their role in church life.

Earlier this month I was asked to chair what we call the Board of Elders. It’s a role that Eleanor Ragg has filled very capably over the last few years, but now feels the need to step back from.

I think that most of the people in our church have little or no idea what we do or how we operate. Elders bring recommendations to church meetings which are mostly accepted, and are occasionally called upon to perform other tasks. Outside that I suspect we’re a bit of a ‘black box’. The downside of this is that the wider church isn’t ‘invested’ in us. We struggle to get interest in becoming an elder. I wonder how many pray for us on a regular basis, or for that matter know enough about us to pray in an informed way.

At the elder’s meeting last Tuesday we began a conversation about how we might open ourselves up to the wider church. Some matters are confidential and not able to be shared. But many of the issues we wrestle with affect the wider church fellowship and would benefit from your prayerful input. If you have thoughts on how we can improve the way we communicate, can I encourage you to talk to an elder about it. Who are we? We are Andrew Khor, Bruce White, Eleanor Ragg, Ian Payton, Joseph Lam and Malcolm Palmer.
