Tēnā koutou!

You may have noticed some new signs up around the place – we have started two new initiatives to help reduce the waste we create as a church. Both of these processes take plastic waste and transform it into useful products such as park benches, fitness equipment and bollards. This is a way better use of plastic than leaving it to sit in a landfill for many years!

1. Soft Plastic Recycling

There is now a bag in the church kitchen where any soft plastic waste can be collected, so long as it is empty, clean and dry. We will take the plastic to the bins outside the supermarkets when enough is collected.

This is an easy system that you could set up in your own home to help reduce your own plastic packaging waste!

2. Oral Care Product Recycling

This process is slightly different – oral care product waste is collected at various drop-off points and sent away to a company called Terracycle for recycling. This means that any old toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes and boxes, and floss containers that your family has finished with can actually be recycled rather than thrown out!

Bring these along to church and place them in the collection bin near the front door.

By reducing the waste we are sending to the landfills, and creating new products out of used goods, we are also reducing the impact of our lifestyle on the planet and environment. We are called to care and protect our natural world, to show kaitiakitanga, or guardianship, in the way we live. Let’s honour God’s world together!

Ngā mihi,
