Avonhead Baptist Church Hui

posted date: Friday 27th April 2018

Avonhead Baptist Hui – starting 9am on 5th May 2018

For those who are planning on coming, there are some general tikanga (culture, custom) we need to be aware of.

● Take your shoes off at the door for the whare (house).

● Remove hats before entering a house.

● No sitting on tables.

● No brushing hair in the kitchen or around food.

In addition, on a Marae:

● Obey any set of rules laid down by the Tangata whenua/Mana whenua.

● During formalities turn off cell phones.

● Promote whanaungatanga (kinship, sense of family connection - a relationship through shared experiences and working together which provides people with a sense of belonging.) within your group, become as one.

Therefore for our Hui:

o    Like our sacred assembly, we will be entering into the whare karakia (church – but translated house of prayer – love that meaning!) through the hall, where we will take our shoes off before entering into the whare karakia.

o    Also like the sacred assembly, we will start the Hui outside the church where we will then be invited into the Hui.

o    At the Hui, everyone has an equal voice, respectfully listening to the opinions of others.

o    The Hui is open to all who call Avonhead Baptist home, regardless of age.

o    There is no fixed timeframe to finish.

o    There is no cost to those who attend, but if people would like to give a koha towards costs, there will be a place to do that.

o    Morning tea, lunch and if needed afternoon tea will be provided.

The korero (topic for discussion) is: We are full, what would God have us do next!

If you are unsure about the format or what is required, please do NOT let this stop you from coming. We will be doing all we can to make this process user friendly, while honouring the Maori hui tikanga.

If you have any questions, please contact Bruce or one of the elders.

We are looking forward to hearing God’s voice together.

See you there!
