As you read this this, eight people from Avonhead Baptist Church will be in New Plymouth attending the annual Baptist Hui, from Thursday 8th to Saturday 11th November.

The Hui is basically the Annual General meeting for the Baptist Union (which in case you didn’t know, exists by an act of Parliament - Baptist Union Incorporation Act 1923)1

For those not familiar with things “Baptist”, Baptist churches associated with the Baptist Union are allowed a number of voting delegates to attend the Hui. This is based upon the membership of the individual churches. We are allowed three, the Minister plus two others. However, others are welcome to attend in a non-voting capacity. Attending this year are John and Lynda, Iain and Margaret, Ian and Gaileen, and Karen and myself. Our delegates this year are Margaret, Gaileen and myself.

Apart from the business side of the event, there are also teaching sessions on matters affecting churches or society in New Zealand, not to mention networking with people and hearing what God is doing in their church.

For me, this annual Hui is a reminder that we do not walk this journey alone, but we are a part of something far bigger.

And then … for those who are really adventurous, the Baptist Union is also a part of the Baptist World Alliance2, which gathers Baptists from all around the world together. Karen and I have been to a couple of their five yearly conferences3, and it was truly amazing worshiping God with like-minded people from all around the world.

So, as you gather to worship this Sunday, remember that we are in fact a part of bigger than simply Avonhead Baptist Church.
